Paintless dent repair in North Texas

Paintless dent repair (PDR) reshapes dented metal from behind the panel with rods and picks, or from the front with glue-pull tabs, restoring the original contour without filler, sanding or repainting. Because the factory finish is never disturbed, PDR is the usual repair for hail damage. It cannot be used where the paint is already cracked, where metal is stretched or creased, within about an inch of a panel edge, on ultra-high-strength steel, or on panels with previous filler or respray.

Hail is the ideal case for PDR: dozens of shallow, rounded impacts spread across large flat panels, with the paint almost always intact. That is exactly the damage the technique was built for.

How it works

A technician gets behind the panel — through a window channel, a tail-light aperture, a drain hole — and pushes the low spot up in tiny increments while reading the reflection of a striped light board on the surface. Where there is no rear access, tabs are glued to the outside of the panel and the dent is pulled instead. It is slow, quiet work and it is entirely a skill question. The same vehicle in two different pairs of hands comes back differently, which is why I care which shop your car goes to.

Where PDR stops working

Any shop that tells you everything can be pushed out is selling. The real limits:

Cracked or chipped paint
Modern clearcoat tolerates roughly 20–30% elongation before it micro-fractures. If the impact already stretched it, pushing finishes the job. Cracked paint disqualifies the panel.
Stretched or creased metal
A sharp crease along a body line has moved metal that will not simply return. Depth relative to diameter matters more than raw size — a small deep pit is harder than a wide shallow dish.
Panel edges
Dents within about an inch of a hem flange are generally out. The tools cannot fit into the crimped zone and levering against the flange can break the bond.
No rear access
Braces, bonded reinforcements and sound-deadening pads block the back of the panel. Glue-pull can work it, but it is slower and more skill-dependent.
Ultra-high-strength steel
Above roughly 600–700 MPa, and up to 1500 MPa for boron steel, the metal is too hard to move safely. Heat is not an option; it destroys the microstructure. Drilling access holes in UHSS is banned by manufacturers.
Previous filler or respray
Factory paint reads about 4 to 6 mils on a gauge. Readings above 8 to 10 mils mean filler or a respray, and filler does not return.
Aluminum
It has no metal memory, so the technician must push past flush to land level, and it work-hardens quickly. Deep repairs risk cracking. Doable, but it is a different skill set. See the truck page.

Why the factory finish is worth protecting

Here is an argument most shops make badly, so let me make it properly.

After a hail repair in Texas you have essentially no route to recover diminished value. The Texas Supreme Court held in 2003 that an insurer is not required to pay diminished value on top of repair costs under the standard personal auto policy, and hail is a first-party comprehensive loss with no at-fault third party to pursue. So the market discount your vehicle takes for having been damaged is yours to absorb.

Which means the quality of the repair is the only thing protecting your resale value. A repainted panel is detectable — by eye in the right light, and definitively with a paint depth gauge. An untouched factory panel is not detectable, because nothing happened to it. That is the real case for PDR, and it does not require anyone to make claims about vehicle history reports that they cannot back up.

This page is general information about how hail claims work in Texas, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy controls your claim. For questions about Texas insurance rules, the Texas Department of Insurance publishes free consumer guides.

Questions people actually ask

What is paintless dent repair?

Paintless dent repair, or PDR, reshapes dented sheet metal from behind with specialized rods and picks, or from the front with glue-pull tabs, working the metal back to its original contour without filler, sanding or repainting. The factory finish is never disturbed.

When can paintless dent repair not be used?

When the paint is already cracked or chipped, when the metal is stretched or sharply creased, when the dent sits within about an inch of a panel edge or over a brace with no rear access, when the panel is ultra-high-strength or boron steel, and when the panel carries filler or a previous respray. Very deep, small-diameter pits are also poor candidates.

Does PDR damage or affect my paint?

No. There is no sanding, no filler, no primer and no respray, so the original factory coating and its corrosion protection stay intact. That is the entire point of the technique.

Is PDR faster than a body shop?

Yes. Published figures put light hail damage at around a day and extensive damage at up to five days or more with PDR, against one to three weeks for conventional repair — because any panel that gets painted needs roughly two more days to cure.

Does paintless dent repair show up on CarFax?

Be careful with the confident answers you will read on this. Vehicle history reports show what gets reported to them, and an insurance claim can generate a record regardless of which repair method was used. What Texas law does say is that hail is expressly excluded from the definition of damage used for salvage-title branding, so hail alone will not brand your title. Anyone telling you PDR never appears anywhere is stating something they cannot know.

Where these numbers come from

  • PDR technical limits: published paintless dent repair technical guidance on clearcoat elongation, edge proximity, ultra-high-strength steel and paint-depth thresholds.
  • Diminished value: American Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Co. v. Schaefer, 124 S.W.3d 154 (Tex. 2003).
  • Salvage-title definition excluding hail: Tex. Transp. Code § 501.091(3)(B).
