What hail damage repair costs in North Texas

Published industry ranges for hail damage repair are $500 to $1,200 for light hail damage and $1,200 to $4,000 or more for extensive hail damage. Severe damage on a large truck or SUV runs above the top of those published ranges. A single door ding runs $195 to $295 and a medium golf-ball-sized dent $250 to $450. On a comprehensive insurance claim the owner normally pays only the policy deductible and the carrier pays the balance. Cost is driven by dent count, dent size, number of panels affected, and whether the panels are steel or aluminum.

Almost nobody in this market will put a number on a page. I think that is a mistake, because the number is not really the secret — the variance is. Here is the whole picture, including the parts that make an estimate move.

These are ranges published by paintless dent repair operators, not an independent survey — there is no Consumer Reports study of PDR pricing. Treat them as the market's own numbers, useful for sanity-checking an estimate, and not as a quote on your vehicle.

The five things that actually move the number

  1. Dent count. This is the single biggest driver. Sixty dents on a roof is a different job from six, even though both read as "hail damage" in conversation.
  2. Depth versus width. A three-inch dent only a tenth of an inch deep is gentle stretching and comes out cleanly. A half-inch dent three-tenths deep is a pit, and pushing it risks a high spot. Small and deep costs more than big and shallow.
  3. Panel count. Roof, hood, both quarters, four doors and a deck lid is eight panels of setup, not one.
  4. Access. Braces, bonded reinforcements and sound-deadening pads block the back of a panel, which forces glue-pull technique from the front — slower, and more skill-dependent.
  5. Steel or aluminum. Aluminum has no metal memory, so a technician has to push past flush to land level, and it work-hardens fast. Every F-150 from 2015 onward is aluminum-bodied. More on trucks here.

The number that matters more than any of these

Your deductible. If your comprehensive deductible is $1,000 and the honest repair is $900, filing a claim gains you nothing and I will tell you so. If the repair is $4,500, the arithmetic is not close. The inspection exists to find out which of those you are in.

Who pays what on a hail claim

Light damage, low deductible
You pay the deductible, the carrier pays the balance.
Light damage, high deductible
Often not worth filing. Paying out of pocket may be cheaper.
Extensive damage
Comprehensive claim. You pay the deductible, the carrier pays the rest.
Liability-only policy
No hail coverage at all. The repair is yours to fund.
Repair cost near vehicle value
The carrier may settle as a total loss and pay actual cash value.

Comprehensive is the coverage that pays for hail. Liability does not — it pays for damage you cause to someone else. If you are not sure which you carry, the declarations page of your policy says so, and I can read it with you. More on what is covered.

Cost questions people actually ask

How much does hail damage repair cost in Texas?

Published industry ranges put light hail damage at $500 to $1,200 and extensive hail damage at $1,200 to $4,000 or more. Severe damage on a large truck or SUV runs above the top of those ranges. The figure depends on dent count, dent size, how many panels are affected, and whether those panels are steel or aluminum.

How much is a single door ding?

Published ranges are $195 to $295 for a single small door ding and $250 to $450 for a medium, golf-ball-sized dent. Two to five dings together typically run $195 to $350.

Is paintless dent repair cheaper than a body shop?

Generally yes, because there is no filler, no primer, no paint and no blending into adjacent panels. It is also faster, since nothing has to cure. The saving is real but it is not the main reason to choose PDR — keeping the factory finish is.

Why can nobody quote me over the phone?

Because the price is driven by dent count and dent depth, and neither is visible in a phone call or a photo. Any number you are given sight-unseen is a guess, and a guess that moves once someone actually looks at the vehicle is worse than no number at all.

Does a bigger vehicle cost more to repair?

Yes, and by more than people expect. A crew-cab truck has a much larger roof, hood and bed than a sedan, so it collects far more impacts in the same storm. Aluminum panels — every Ford F-150 from the 2015 model year onward — add difficulty on top of that.

Where these numbers come from

  • Repair price ranges: pricing guides published by paintless dent repair shops, which are commercially interested sources rather than an independent survey. No independent pricing study of PDR exists.
  • Coverage and deductible rules: Texas Department of Insurance consumer guide to auto insurance.
  • Aluminum panel behavior and repair limits: published PDR technical guidance; Ford moved the F-150 to aluminum body panels for the 2015 model year.
